SHEFFIELD MP Nick Clegg has challenged opposition Labour politicians about what they would cut in the wake of criticism.
Town Hall chiefs, including Coun Julie Dore, Labour leader of Sheffield Council, said they feared further austerity measures risked social unrest.
Labour has also spoken out against coalition plans to limit increases in benefits and tighten rules on tax credits.
Mr Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam, said: “We have now paid off about a quarter of our deficit and we must continue down that path.
“The Labour leadership continue to complain about the coalition’s approach without providing any credible alternative.
“They’re learning the tricks of opposition and rhetorical refrains, but where are the numbers? What are their sums?
“The country has undergone the biggest economic crisis in living memory, yet they offer no explanation of how they’d get us out of it, nor any admission of responsibility for their part in creating it.”
“Labour admit they wouldn’t reverse every cut.
“They should tell us which they would keep, which they would lose and where they would find the money.”
