BOXING star Kell Brook has packed a punch with South Yorkshire’s emergency services by putting his weight behind a ‘safe driving’ programme.

The Sheffield fighter, an unbeaten welterweight hoping to go for a world title later this year, is supporting an education programme warning young South Yorkshire motorists about risks on the roads.

He visited the new Lifewise Centre in Hellaby, Rotherham, to see a Subaru Impreza driving simulator, used as part of driving safety programmes run by South Yorkshire fire service and police.

The new centre is run by the police and fire service to give safety and crime prevention advice by using a life-size film set of a small town where scenarios can be acted out.

Kell, aged 25, who was convicted of speeding as a young driver, said: “When young people get behind the wheel, or even get into a car with their friends, it’s really important that they know just how dangerous a car can be if it’s driven irresponsibly.

“I know from personal experience about the temptation to drive fast, so the work the fire service and police are doing here is fantastic because it teaches youngsters from an early age about the consequences of reckless driving.”

The Subaru, funded by South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership, has a plasma screen which shows a driving safety DVD on the dangers of speeding, drink or drug driving and using mobile phones behind the wheel.

Kell visited Lifewise with his main sponsor, firefighting equipment distributor North Fire.

North Fire managing director Oliver North said: “The emergency services do a great deal of work to educate young people and sometimes having a figurehead such as Kell can help to get the message across.”
