AN ASYLUM seeker living in Sheffield has won a judicial review against deportation.
Friends of Odette Sefuko, who fled the Democratic Republic of Congo after the rape and murder of relatives, won the support of politicians and MPs to fight UK authorities’ plans to send her back to Africa.
The mother-of-five, who has been in Sheffield since 2005, was detained by immigration officials and held in Yarl’s Wood detention centre, Berkshire.
A date has not yet been set for the judicial review of the UK Border Agency’s decision.
The legal action follows protests supported by MPs including Paul Blomfield, who represents Sheffield Central.
The UK Border Agency wants to send Odette to Uganda because she travelled under a false identity, as a Ugandan pastor’s wife, to enter the UK. Odette’s supporters question why officials want to send her to Uganda - a country ‘she has never visited’.
