CHRISTMAS comes but once a year - except in Mosborough, that is.

Many hungry pensioners missed the annual festive feast at their local when Sheffield was submerged under the biggest snowfall in decades in early December.

So George and Dragon landlord Paul Hammond-Mott decided to put on a Christmas dinner with a difference - in the winter wasteland of early February instead.

And the decision proved so popular with regulars that Paul and his wife Christine

had to put on two spreads on consecutive weeks - with almost 60 people turning up to tuck in.

“Our annual Christmas Fayre menu is always popular but due to the adverse weather many people who had booked in simply weren’t able to get out of their houses,” said Paul, who has been mine host at the pub for the past 13 years.

“I was having a drink with a couple last month and they told me how much they’d missed their Christmas dinner - so flippantly I told them I was planning something in February instead.

“Two weeks later they were in again and said they’d got 15 people interested so far. They’d taken me seriously! So many people booked in for the first lunch that we had to hold a second one.”

Diners tucked into a full menu of game soup or melon, turkey with all the trimmings, Christmas pudding or trifle or apple crumble, followed by a cheese board and

finally mince pies with cream - all for a special pensioners’ price of just £10.50.

“Everyone wore party hats, the staff wore Christmas outfits, we had Christmas carols playing and there were crackers on all the tables,” Paul said.

“It was great fun for everyone, and quite a boost for business on a cold grey February day,” he added.

Now the pub preparing to ‘go dark’ for a month while it undergoes a compete refurbishment - but when it reopens in April, Paul is thinking about putting on a special Valentine’s Day dinner!
