Insurers warn over ‘frosting’

insurers have warned they may not pay out if cars are stolen while unattended as the owner defrosts them.

Yesterday another car was stolen in Doncaster in such circumstances, the third this week.

The car was taken from Scawthorpe and later abandoned in Denaby.

The British Insurance Brokers’ Association says many insurers will not pay a claim should the car be stolen while being ‘warmed up’ with the keys in the ignition.

They say most motor insurance policies now have a specific ‘keys in car’ or ‘vehicle left unattended’ clause and exclude claims in these circumstances.

There may also be a ‘reasonable care’ clause, whereby the insurer may reject a claim on the grounds of the policyholder being ‘reckless’ in not safeguarding the vehicle.
