Police e-fit of a man they want to trace over a robbery in Barnsley

DETECTIVES hunting two muggers who tried to rob a woman in South Yorkshire have released an e-fit of a man they want to speak to.

Officers have released the image in the hope of tracing the offenders, who struck as a 26-year-old woman was walking along Laithes Lane, Athersley.

She told police she noticed two men walking towards her from the direction of Lindhurst Road.

As the pair got closer, one asked the woman if she had a cigarette before grabbing her handbag.

The woman was dragged to the ground and the men fled empty-handed.

Police said the victim was left with a graze to her head after her ordeal.

The man pictured in the e-fit is white, aged 18 to 25, about 5ft 8in, slim, with broad shoulders. He has a long gaunt face, a crooked nose and his left eyebrow was pierced with a silver ring and ball on the night of the attack.

He also had a stud earring in his left ear.

The man was also wearing a white baseball cap with a dark round motif, a dark silky tracksuit type top and spoke with a local accent.

The other man was white, aged between 16 and 18, about 5ft and had short, dark hair which was gelled forward.

He was wearing a dark tracksuit and white trainers and also spoke with a local accent.

Officers investigating the attack, which happened on Saturday, December 29, between 11pm and 11.30pm, want to speak to witnesses and anyone in the area, including an elderly man walking near the bus stop at the junction of Chatsworth Road and Laithes Lane.

n Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
