Have say on assemblies’ replacement

CONSULTATION on plans to replace Sheffield Council’s seven community assemblies with other local-based work has been announced.

Coun Mazher Iqbal, council cabinet member for communities, said the process is about defining the ‘detail of future arrangements’ once the assemblies finish in September.

He said: “After the council has confirmed its budget, we will carry out further consultation on the detail of future arrangements.

“The consultation will be between April and August.”

The council currently spends £2.6 million a year on community assemblies, which includes £1.6 million of community grants.

Coun Iqbal says £580,000 will be available, including £300,000 of grants for community groups within councillors’ wards.

The funding also pays for support staff to help councillors.

To take part in the consultation on how community assemblies, people must first give their views on the proposal to axe assemblies at www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/community-assemblies or by calling 0114 273 6751 before January 28.
