A TRAINEE hairdresser has been awarded £20,500 compensation for sexual and racial harassment at the hands of her former employer.
Maryam Mashayekhi worked for Toni and Guy salon in Sheffield – and took her previous employer, Christopher Storey, to justice in October at an employment tribunal over sexual and racial harassment.
Mr Storey was found to have engaged in inappropriate conduct relating to Mrs Mashayekhi’s sex and race – leaving her humiliated and her confidence shattered.
He subjected her to sexual harassment and racial discrimination, made her an ‘indecent proposal’ of £10,000 for sex, and made stereotypical racial comments before unfairly dismissing her.
The panel found George Plus One Ltd – a franchise of Toni and Guy – constructively and unfairly dismissed Mrs Mashayeki, and an initial £1,057 was awarded for a shortfall in holiday pay and wages.
Speaking after the £20,500 compensation award, Mrs Mashayeki said: “I am very pleased with the result.”
Mr Sim of Howells Solicitors said: “Mrs Mashayekhi was found to be subjected to behaviour that is wholly unacceptable in any workplace and we are pleased justice has been achieved.”
