A TEENAGE girl who attacked and kicked a neighbour was jailed for just one day after a judge said she had already experienced the ‘short shock’ of prison while on remand.

Samantha Owens hit Kenneth Brown in the face during a row in which she accused him of striking his pregnant ex-girlfriend.

Sheffield Crown Court heard the attack happened in July at the block of flats where they both lived in Netherthorpe.

On the previous night, Owens’ boyfriend, 20-year-old Paul Cain, had assaulted Mr Brown with a knuckleduster and left him needing stitches.

Nicholas Neal, prosecuting, said Cain went back the next evening with 18-year-old Owens, who asked Mr Brown where his ex-girlfriend was.

Mr Neal said: “She accused him of hitting pregnant women. She hit him in the face and kicked him in the ribs.

“Mr Brown said she was trying to goad him into hitting her, so she could call it self-defence.”

The court heard Owens had previous convictions for robbery, burglary and criminal damage.

Danny Simpson, mitigating, said: “She was swept along in this. She accepts that was wrong and it’s something she’s ashamed of.”

He said Owens, of Abbeydale Road, Sheffield, had spent two weeks on remand at New Hall Prison, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, awaiting sentence after admitting common assault.

Mr Simpson said: “It’s said the clang of the prison gates is the most effective deterrent.”

Judge Robert Moore sentenced Owens to 28 days in a young offenders’ institution, to include time spent on remand.

As she was entitled to release after serving half, she would only spend one more day in custody.

Judge Moore told her: “You’ve had the short shock of 14 days in prison.”

Cain, of Boundary Road, Wybourn, Sheffield, was jailed for 16 months at an earlier hearing after admitting assault causing actual bodily harm.
