STUDENTS in Sheffield are the focus of a new campaign warning them of ‘money mule’ fraudsters.
Crimestoppers is urging students to be wary of a con in which they are unknowingly lured into illegal money laundering.
A typical money mule scam involves fraudsters putting adverts through doors offering good money for very little work. The work usually involves money being transferred into the mule’s account by the fraudster, with the instruction to forward that money to an offshore account.
Crimestoppers, the independent crime-fighting charity, is using the campaign at Sheffield University to warn students that becoming involved in such a scheme is a criminal offence - and one which could lead to a prison sentence.
Gemma Wilson from Crimestoppers said: “This is a crime people don’t know a lot about, and it is this lack of knowledge that could see them duped into taking part in criminal activity, completely unaware they are doing so.
“Crimestoppers is launching this campaign to raise awareness but also to give students an outlet to pass on information about fraudsters and scams.”
