Firm fined for flouting animal transportation rules in Barnsley

A firm has been fined £12,500 for breaching animal transportation rules when travelling through Barnsley.

James Crowden, trading as TC and BJ Crowden Ltd, based in Newark, was caught transporting two cows to an abattoir in a dirty trailer without the relevant authorisation.

Magistrates heard that he was stopped during a routine transport check last October and inspected by an animal health officer.

Councillor Roy Miller, of Barnsley Council’s cabinet, said: “Animal health officers carry out vital work to prevent the spread of diseases such as foot and mouth and BSE.

“We will take appropriate action against any hauliers who flout the law.”

Crowden pleaded guilty to five breaches and was ordered to pay £2,114.95 in costs.
