Firefighters attended after 40 bales of hay stored in a farmer’s field in Sheffield were set alight in an arson attack.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze on Plumbley Hall Road, Mosborough, at 8.40pm yesterday.

They had to walk to the burning bales, which were half a mile away from the nearest road and used water-filled backpacks and beaters to douse the flames.

A skip found burning on The Ravine, Shiregreen, Sheffield, at 12.10am today had also been set alight in an arson attack.

South Yorkshire Police officers have been informed of the arson attacks.
