The M18 following the crash in which a man in his 50s, was killed.

The M18 following the crash in which a man in his 50s, was killed.

THE southbound stretch of the M18 in South Yorkshire is closed this morning following a fatal collision.

The crash, involving a number of vehicles, happened between junctions 2 and 3 - Wadworth and Warmsworth - just after 7am.

South Yorkshire Police said a man, believed to be in his 50s, got out of his vehicle after he was involved in a collision.

While he was out of his vehicle he was hit by another vehicle in an adjoining lane.

Police said a number of other vehicles then ended up colliding.

The motorist who left his vehicle suffered fatal injuries.

The M18 has been closed between Junctions 2 and 54 while a police investigation into the incident is carried out.

It is believed that the road could remain closed until around 2pm.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Emergency services are dealing with a multi- vehicle collision on the M18 southbound carriageway that occurred just after 7am this morning.

“It is believed that a man, thought to be in his 50s, got out of his vehicle after he was involved in a collision before being hit by another vehicle or vehicles travelling in an adjoining lane.

“A number of other vehicles have then collided as a result.

“The M18 southbound remains closed between junction 4 and junction 2. Other surrounding roads have reopened but are heavily congested.

“Officers dealing with the collision urge motorists to find an alternative route. It is expected that the carriageway will be closed for several hours.”
