Farm fined for animal cruelty
A FARM company has been prosecuted for transporting an animal in great pain with a damaged womb.
Sheffield Council launched the case against Kirton Farmers, of Yew Tree Farm, Newark, Nottinghamshire, which transported a cow to a Sheffield slaughterhouse.
At Sheffield Magistrates’ Court, the farm company was fined £750 and ordered to pay £150 costs and a £15 surcharge.
An officer from the council’s environmental protection service had been alerted when the cow arrived at Woolley Brothers, Mosborough.
Vets said the cow should not have been transported.
The court heard a representative of the company admitted he had transported the cow in April. He said he had noticed the condition when loading the animal but had not called a vet.
The company pleaded guilty by post.
