Former Sheffield United star turned boxer Curtis Woodhouse tried to become a peacemaker when another former Blade went berserk in a non league matches, throwing punches in the crowd.
On the 19-year anniversary of Eric Cantona’s notorious ‘kung fu’ kick at Crystal Palace, Goole Town captain Karl Colley stormed into the crowd during his side’s 3-0 defeat to local side Coalville Town yesterday.
Colley, who used to be on Sheffield United’s books, had been sent off after a bad tackle and was enraged after being goaded by abuse from the terracing.
It is thought his ire was directed at a home fan, rather than an away one.
Goole, for whom Woodhouse works on the coaching staff as an assistant manager, sacked Colley immediately after the final whistle.
The club later issued this statement: “After the deplorable incident at today’s home game against Coalville Town, we can confirm that the player responsible has been released by the club.
“We are a family club and incidents of this nature have no place in football and will not be tolerated at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.
“The club acted quickly and decisively and released the player with immediate effect and as such the player in question will never play for our football club again.
“We apologise to each and every supporter at the game today and whilst as a club, we can’t legislate for incidents of this nature, we will not tolerate them from anyone.”
Coalville, who are chasing promotion to the Evo-Stik Premier, which would put them two rungs below the Conference, said they were not holding Goole responsible. “It’s nothing to do with Goole, I heard the two chairmen talking afterwards,” secretary Robert Brooks said. “There is no issue with the club.”
Woodhouse, who tried to stop the player, tweeted: “Thought id seen it all, I now have.”
Later he added: “I don’t condone or make excuses for today, it was wrong on many levels.”
And Colley, aged 30, who arrived at Bramall Lane during the Neil Warnock era, added on the social network: “Thanks for people’s comments saying do I fancy a round with them lol clearly these people don’t know me or anything about me but that’s fine.”
