CANNABIS worth £40,000 was seized and more than a dozen people were arrested, fined or given cautions during a crackdown on crime in South Yorkshire.

Police from Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster worked together on a three-day operation to fight crime in the Dearne area.

In Barnsley, 16 cannabis plants and 2.9kg of the drug was seized, with a street value of approximately £36,000, from properties in Darfield, Bolton-on-Dearne and Thurnscoe.

Two men aged 53 and 26 were arrested during the raids on suspicion of producing cannabis.

Meanwhile, in Rotherham, 13 cannabis plants were seized with a street value of around £4,000 from houses in Brampton, West Melton and Wath.

Other drugs including steroids, temazepam, subutex and amphetamines were also discovered and taken from properties in Thurnscoe and Barnsley town centre.

Chief Inspector Gwyn Thomas, from South Yorkshire Police, said: “This operation has been about officers from the three towns working more closely together in the Dearne area. Criminals travel and do not operate within boundaries.

“In Swinton, Goldthorpe and Mexborough, similar crimes are being committed by the same people, and by joining our resources we are able to combat crime in the area much more effectively.”

A 29-year-old man and 27-year-old woman were arrested at a property on Maple Road, Mexborough, on suspicion of possession with intent to supply cannabis. Drugs paraphernalia was recovered from the address and £3,000 in cash seized.

Two drivers were given fines for not wearing seatbelts and a motorist’s vehicle was confiscated for failing to have insurance in Thurnscoe.

High visibility patrols were also conducted and crime prevention advice offered.
