A FAMILY’S pet dog has been put down after biting a six-year-old girl in her own home, police have revealed.

The little girl was attacked by the American bulldog at her home on Manor Lane, Manor Park, Sheffield.

Officers were called to the property at 5.40pm on Sunday, February 5.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “It was reported that a dog, a family pet, had bitten a six-year-old-girl at an address on Manor Lane, Sheffield.

“The little girl was bitten in her home by the dog, which is believed to have been an American bulldog.

“As a result, the child was conveyed to Sheffield Children’s Hospital for treatment.

“The dog was later taken to a veterinary surgeon, where it was destroyed with the full consent of the family.”

My, my, fourteen brief lines of a story and it generates such responses, both informed and uniformed in the normal knee jerk reaction. The simple matter is, the story is not complete enough for a judgement to be made on this family, we do not know what the circumstances are in regards to the incident. I tend to agree that if a dog bites a child it should be put to sleep. However, having kept dogs most of my life and raised 4 children who have never been bitten by any of them, I would also say that the problem is the lack of training or treatment of a dog that makes this kind of incident more likely. Don't blame the breed, blame the owner...in my time and my career, I have been bitten a few times (not by my own dogs I might add) and in every case, bar one, it was by a mixed breed dog.

I have put Post 33 through 'Da Manna Trenslata' for you all.. @post 29 I don't know what you're going on about. I am just saying that people on this forum shouldn't say that everyone with American Bulldogs should have there kids taken away from them. I have an American Bulldog and kids, any breed of dog can turn. Is that English enough for you? Now do you no what I'm getting at?.... There you go sh.agnasty, is that better for you?

@33 what? Do you speak like that? You must actually think with your words in that order, or do they just mess up when you try to put them down?

Posts 32 and 33, I don't know what you are smoking but you are certainly not writing in any form of English that I can understand.

There's a few stereotypes going on here, yes these dogs have a bad reputation, yes you are more likely to find irresponsible people in deprived areas but like so many people have pointed out the dog is only as bad as the owner wants it to be. I have a staffordshire, another breeed with a bad reputation, been trained and raised properly with children from birth and never shown the slightest sign of aggression, because he has been raised properly. So before blaming the breed look at the owners. Sadly there is no arguement for the dog being destroyed, it's an obvious danger and will not change no matter what.

Posts 16, 18 and 20, you may well have some good points to put across but unfortunately I do not have much of a clue what you are attempting to say. Please advise what language you are using so that I may be able to find an interpreter to convert your messages into English.
