‘Despicable’ conman stole from old woman

NEWS: News.

NEWS: News.

A conman stole cash and jewellery from an elderly woman after tricking his way into her home.

The man knocked on the woman’s door to say he had lost something in her garden and to ask if he could look for it.

He then asked the woman to turn on her kitchen taps for a while, then off again, before eventually leaving her home.

Shortly after he left, the victim discovered cash had been taken from her handbag and she contacted the police.

Several rings were also later found to have been stolen.

Police are now carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area around the house on Williamthorpe Road, North Wingfield, Chesterfield, and urging people to be vigilant about intruders.

Community safety inspector Russell Dakin said: “This is a despicable crime where an elderly woman was targeted, and we would like anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area that evening to contact us.

“Never let anyone into your home if they have not made a prior arrangement.

“If they call and ask to come in, check with the company they claim to be from. If they are genuine they will understand.

“Fit a door chain and use it and avoid using people you do not know to do odd jobs for you. Get a number of quotes from reputable companies before agreeing to work.

“If you think you may have been a victim or a suspicious caller comes to your home, contact police immediately.”

The man is described as white, aged 30 to 40, and of medium build. He was wearing a checked shirt. The theft happened at around 7.15pm on Monday.

n Anyone with information, or who may have seen anything suspicious, should call Derbyshire police on 101.
