Deputy PM’s pride in city’s Commonwealth squash star

Sheffield Hallam MP and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has spoken of his pride after the city’s three time squash world champion Nick Matthew led out the England team at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

The former High Storrs School pupil, who won gold at the last Commonwealth Games, was nominated by his team-mates to be flag bearer for the opening ceremony at Celtic Park.

Nick is a member of Hallamshire Tennis and Squash club, which is in Mr Clegg’s Hallam constituency.

Mr Clegg said: “I’m proud that Sheffield’s own Nick Matthew was leading at the England team at the Commonwealth Games.

“It is a huge honour and one that Nick richly deserves.

“In Sheffield we’re all immensely proud of Nick Matthew’s achievements, which include being a gold medal winner and a three time world champion.

“But Nick is also a great ambassador for our city. I know first-hand some of the outstanding projects he has led on getting local children from disadvantaged backgrounds into sport.

“I know the whole of Sheffield will be cheering him on. Just like everyone else, I’m hoping he can bring home gold for Sheffield and Team England.
