OPPOSITION Liberal Democrats have criticised ruling Labour councillors in Sheffield for turning down £1.1 million of Government funding to mitigate against council tax benefit cuts.
Lib Dem leader Coun Shaffaq Mohammed said: “Other northern cities have done the right thing by accepting cash to protect vulnerable residents.”
Coun Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for finance, replied: “We were only offered the cash on condition we provided funding, too – and we would have had to cut something.”
