Concern over roads policing
A ROAD safety charity has hit out at police forces for reducing the number of traffic officers on the roads, with new figures showing there are 16 fewer in South Yorkshire today than there were five years ago.
Brake, which campaigns for safer roads, claims that nationally the number of traffic officers has dropped by 11.6 per cent – six times greater than cuts to overall police numbers.
The charity is calling for Government action to make roads policing a ‘national policing priority’.
South Yorkshire is one of the forces with the most traffic officers, with 193 on its books. In 2007 there were 209.
Brake’s deputy chief executive Julie Townsend said: “It is crucial the Government acts now to put a stop to these dramatic cuts in life-saving roads policing.”
