Concern at lack of skilled workers
‘MORE will have to be done’ to improve skills in Barnsley as job opportunities are squeezed at existing major employers such as the council, officials have warned.
Barnsley Council officers are investigating qualifications of the town’s workforce to address a current ‘skills gap’.
A report by think tank Centre For Cities this week revealed the town had the third lowest total of highly-skilled workers of any large town or city in Britain, with less than 20 per cent of the workforce holding the equivalent of an NVQ level four.
Coun Dick Wraith, chairman of Barnsley Council’s economy and skills scrutiny commission, which ordered the inquiry, said: “We have heard that too many of our people don’t have the right skills necessary to obtain jobs – this is a big worry for us and we need to get to the bottom of it.”
