drivers are spending almost a fifth of their journey time ignoring the road, according to a recent study.
The study, which found that 22 per cent drivers’ time was spent focussing on things other than the road, used tracking technology in glasses to record driver’s eye movements on roads in Sheffield, London and Oxford.
Mike Ashworth, of Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership, said: “We’re urging drivers to protect themselves and others by giving the road 100 per cent of their attention. You’re more likely to crash if you get distracted.
“Be sure to pull over if you need to re-programme your sat-nav, tune your radio, use your phone or have something to eat or drink.”
The study found that drivers spend seven per cent of their time looking at scenery, compared to two per cent watching oncoming vehicles.
