Staff at a sixth form college in Sheffield say they will take strike action over the threat of compulsory redundancies.
The NUT say their members at the college, which faces cuts of £1 million in the next academic year, have voted 95 per cent in favour of taking strike action.
They say if no progress is made in talks between the union and college management, they will stage a one-day walk-out on Thursday, March 14.
A NUT spokesperson said: “Longley Park Sixth Form College is facing £1m of cuts in the next academic year. This is a devastating level of cuts to a popular and well-respected sixth-form college.
“The effect will be a reduction of courses and services available to students, and a loss of nearly one fifth of staff.
“NUT members in the college have voted 95 per cent in favour of taking strike action and demand that college management take seriously our alternative proposals for reducing the college deficit.
“These cuts are partly due to government cuts, and as such we also ask our political representatives to do all they can to fight these cuts.
College Principal Mo Nisbet said: “Reduction in post-16 funding means the college does need to make significant reductions in costs.
“We have been working with staff and unions to avoid compulsory redundancies, and hope to be able to confirm this early next week.
“We will work with the NUT to reach a negotiated agreement before March 14.
“Reductions to our course offer are only in areas where numbers are low.”
