SHEFFIELD’S newest England cricket star Joe Root has been congratulated by Hallam MP and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.
Joe recently made his full debut in England’s historic test series win against India.
During the final game of the series in Nagpur, he made a first innings score of 73 to help secure the series win.
Joe, aged 21, lives in Dore, within Mr Clegg’s constituency, and learned his trade at Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club, which is also the former club of previous England captain Michael Vaughan.
Mr Clegg said: “Joe not only made an outstanding debut and did his part to help England secure their first series win in India for many years, but he also made the people of his home city very proud too.
“It is clear Sheffield has another major talent on its hands and I for one am looking forward to seeing Joe develop and flourish as an England player in the years to come.”
Further plaudits for Joe have come from Sheffield’s former England captain Michael Vaughan, who said: “I have known him since he was a young lad. I played cricket with his dad, Matt.
“Joe and his brother, Billy, were always at the games playing on the outfield.
“In actual fact, his younger brother had more talent because he could bowl leg spin and was a great fielder. But Joe was the quiet guy in the background who just got on with it.
“His maturity and thoughtful approach is impressive.”
