Clegg hits back at council cuts

DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg has responded to Sheffield Council’s cuts announcement.

The Hallam MP and Liberal Democrat leader said: “We all have to deal with less money as a result of the economic crisis, and there is no denying that the council has a big challenge to maintain services.

“However, before Labour councillors close libraries, leisure centres and other community facilities, they should look at what they are planning to continue spending on.

“It cannot be right that, at the same time as announcing these cuts, they are continuing to spend £500,000 on employees carrying out trade union duties and employing new managers on salaries in excess of £80,000.”
