Church could train clergy
The Church of England could seek degree-awarding powers of its own as part of the Government drive to bring new providers into higher education, according to a report compiled by the Bishop of Sheffield.
The Rt Rev Steven Croft put forward the proposal in the document for the Church’s national assembly, the General Synod, on changes to higher education funding and the future of clergy training.
Although he said the move would not be a simple task, the report added it could save money and give the Church more control over training up the clergymen of the future. A fifth of clergy are set to retire over the next six years.
