Charity inundated with unwanted Carroll and Torres shirts to send to African children

A SHEFFIELD charity which donates football shirts to Africa has been flooded with hundreds of replica tops from disenchanted Newcastle United and Liverpool fans.
Afrikit has been inundated with dozens of shirts bearing the names of Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll after last week’s Premier League transfer dramas.
The January transfer window saw Torres move to Chelsea from Liverpool for a British record fee of £50 million.
And Toon hitman Carroll was sold by Newcastle United to Liverpool for £35m.
Andrew Trott is one of five students who founded the charity which sends out used kits to youngsters in Africa.
Today he said they had received an estimated 300 to 400 Torres shirts and about 100 with Carroll’s name on the back.
Andrew, who is studying history and politics at The University of Sheffield, said the shirts were donated after a fan posted on social networking website Twitter last week advising supporters to send in their shirts to Afrikit rather than burn them.
Liverpool fan Andrew, of Parkers Road, Broomhill, said: “We have all put so much hard work into this and we are trying to bring some happiness to kids in some of the poorest areas in Africa.
“My house is swamped with shirts!
“It is very disappointing Torres has left but every cloud has a silver lining and the silver lining is that there will be a lot of very happy African children wearing Torres shirts.”
Andrew runs the charity with friends Eliott Bryan, Jack Hands, Terry Denness and Rob Preston.
It was founded in 2009 after Eliott visited a village in Kenya where he witnessed youngsters’ passion for football.
Since then Afrikit has received 4,500 donations and has worked with charities in Tanzania, Kenya, Sudan and Malawi.
