Cars seized in probe into theft of diesel from Rotherham

Two vehicles have been seized by police and customs officials as part of a probe into diesel thefts in Rotherham.

Officers investigating thefts from an industrial unit at Parkgate were carrying out inquiries at an address in Westfield Road, Brampton Bierlow, where they found containers which appeared to have remnants of red diesel inside, as well as two diesel-fuelled road vehicles.

Officers from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs were called to assist and inspect the vehicles - a black Vauxhall Insignia and a grey Landrover Freelander - which were found to contain red diesel in the fuel tanks and were seized.

Acting Detective Sergeant Andrew Shaw said: “This is a fantastic example of partnership working between South Yorkshire Police and our partners from Revenue and Customs.

“This incident should serve as a warning to people who flout the law and use red diesel.

“People who use red diesel can cause damage to their vehicles’ engine, and may also be supporting and encouraging criminality and organised crime.

“Theft of red diesel is not a victimless crime.”

Three men have been arrested and released on bail.
