Cannabis worth £2m revealed in South Yorkshire drugs raids

Cannabis factory uncovered in Kilnhurst, Rotherham

Cannabis factory uncovered in Kilnhurst, Rotherham

CANNABIS plants worth over £2 million have been seized in police raids – with one haul thought to be one of the biggest ever found in the county.

Two busts on a former restaurant on High Street, Rotherham, and industrial premises in the town’s Kilnhurst area, found almost 2,500 cannabis plants in total in just a few days.

Police also arrested two people at the second site, where a massive 1,870 plants were found, and have charged them with offences of producing drugs.

Sgt Jamie Henderson, of Rotherham’s tasking team, said: “We’ve taken over £2m of cannabis off the streets in just a week.

“Information from members of the public led to the second raid.

“Inside the industrial premises we found two Oriental males, there as gardeners, who have been charged and remanded with offences of production.

“There were 1,870 cannabis plants inside and each one had a value of around £1,000.

“It was the biggest amount I’ve ever known of that we have found.”

Another 600 plants were found at the former restaurant – with an estimated street value of around half a million pounds.

Investigations are continuing to trace people in connection with the drugs.

Rawmarsh Safer Neighbourhood Team carried out the second raid at the former industrial premises, on Glasshouse Road, Kilnhurst, and had to smash their way in as part of it was cordoned off.

Further drugs raids in the Eastwood area have also been taking place.

Sgt Henderson said that any information received from the public about drugs would be acted on by police.

He added: “There are quite a lot of signs people can look out for, such as a smell of cannabis.

“People talk and do pass the information on to police. We always tell people if they have suspicions about neighbours to give the information to the police.

“Some of the sentences courts are handing out now are a significant deterrent.

“There was one case recently where a man had 11 plants but was sentenced to two years.”

Report information to police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
