Police are investigating the death of a Barnsley man who was crushed to death in a lift in an Elizabethan country estate.
Arthur Mellar had worked as a butler at 16th century Burghley House in Lincolnshire for eight years, and was bringing suitcases out of the service elevator when it is believed to have given way and fallen on him.
The 47-year-old was seriously injured, and died later in hospital.
His partner, Gerwin Castillo, paid tribute to a ‘kind and generous’ man.
Mr Mellar’s mother Mona, brother Frederick and sister Ivy all still live in Barnsley.
Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating.
