A SOUTH Yorkshire soldier who died in a massive Taliban bomb blast in Afghanistan was unlawfully killed, an inquest has ruled.

Coroner Nicola Mundy gave the verdict after concluding the inquest into the death of Trooper James Leverett, aged 20, of Rawmarsh, Rotherham, and a member of the Royal Dragoon Guards.

The inquest heard James died when the Viking armoured vehicle he was driving triggered an improvised explosive device buried beneath the ground in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in July 2010. Medics battled unsuccessfully to save his life.
