POLICE cordoned off a Sheffield street after a man began hurling objects from a flat window at passers-by.
Brooklands Avenue, Fulwood, was closed for about 12 hours on Saturday as police negotiated with the man before his arrest.
The man, described by police as a ‘47-year-old local man’ began pouring boiling water from the window of a first-floor flat, above Rhythm & Booze off-licence, just after 10am.
Shortly afterwards, he started to throw crockery out and could be heard shouting obscenities from behind a poster in the window reading: ‘Liberal Democrats winning here.’
David Curzon, manager of the nearby GT News, said: “The police negotiated with him for hours.
“He was shouting and screaming at his window all day, although I’m not sure what about.
“Luckily nobody was hurt as far as we can tell but it took the police a long time to calm him down.”
A man was eventually arrested in connection with the incident at about 10.45pm.
One nearby resident, who declined to be named, said: “There was such a lot of activity; police vans and cars and so many officers everywhere.
“We could’t believe how long it went on and we have no idea what triggered it or what he wanted, but the police seemed to be stuck in a waiting game with him.”
A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police thanked local residents for their patience as officers at the scene worked all day to resolve the situation.
