Blunkett backs burial petition

SHEFFIELD MP David Blunkett is among politicians who have signed a petition calling on India to grant a proper burial for a Kashmiri separatist leader.

Maqbool Butt, viewed as a ‘prisoner of conscience’ among supporters, was hanged in Delhi in February 1984, aged 46, and is in an unmarked grave.

Mr Bunkett, Brightside and Hillsborough MP, said: “All of us would want in death respect, which is essential for grieving by the family and in recognition of their faith.”

Matloub Khan, a freelance journalist from Burngreave whose family emigrated from Kashmir, said: “A large number of Sheffield’s Pakistani community have Kashmiri backgrounds and would feel strongly about this issue.”
