FIRST the snow, and now more disruption is to come, with most of South Yorkshire likely to be covered by lethal sheet ice today.
Sub-zero temperatures last night and in the early hours today meant wintry showers were expected to freeze on impact – creating treacherous black ice on pavements and roads.
Weather forecasters predict today’s temperatures would struggle to get above zero.
A MeteoGroup spokesman said: “There will be the odd flurry of snow into Tuesday, and it will be misty and very cold, but ice will be a big issue.
“The temperature could drop to minus four, and if there is rain and sleet it will freeze on contact with the ground. Snow on the ground will also freeze.
“Further snow is possible during Tuesday and it will remain very cold.”
According to official figures, Sheffield recorded 18cm of snow yesterday. Early morning commuters found most main roads passable with care, but side roads were treacherous as gritters and snow ploughs concentrated on priority routes.
Chris Morris, operational director for Sheffield Council highways contractor Amey, said: “Our teams are working flat out to keep Sheffield moving and dealing with this latest bout of snow.
“We’ve been working day and night, and by yesterday morning we had spread 2,700 tonnes of rock salt.
“Our ploughing operations are running non-stop, including during peak hours. We ask that people assist us by parking cars sensibly to allow enough room, including at street corners.”
