The Bishop of Sheffield praised South Yorkshire people’s fairness in his maiden speech in the House of Lords.

The Rt Rev Dr Steven Croft highlighted the city’s commitment to fairness and equality.

He praised the city’s commitment to the NHS and its Fairness Commission, which aims to promote equality of access to all forms of health care.

Dr Croft also spoke on the debate on patient choice at the end of life.

He said he had had ‘regular contact with the dying and bereaved’ during his years of ordinary parish ministry.

Dr Croft said: “The matters we debate here are of profound importance to those who are near to death and to their wider families.”

He added: “The ministry of chaplains in our hospitals and hospices remains a vital part of end-of-life care. Chaplains are present to minister to those of all faiths and of none.

“They are a vital part of the team in end-of-life care as a specialist resource, as experts able to offer training to colleagues and as a point of referral in moments of crisis.”
