THE COLD snap could draw to a close today as temperatures rise and snow turns into rain.
Forecasters said the snow and ice that has covered South Yorkshire’s roads and pavements in recent weeks is set to thaw this weekend and into next week.
Experts say next week will be much milder and wetter.
John Lee, of MeteoGroup forecasters, said the heavy snow which was predicted to have fallen overnight will soon start to melt
“This morning we are expecting there will be fresh snow on the ground but in general it’s going to be a dry and bright day with plenty of sunshine.
“It will be quite breezy and slightly less cold with maximum temperatures reaching 5°C.
John added: “It will stay dry into Saturday evening, but spells of sleet and rain with strong winds are expected overnight and temperatures will drop to a low of 2°C.
“Sunday will be dry and fine with sunny spells. There is a chance of blustery showers, but this will mostly affect Western areas.”
Sunday will be slightly milder with highs of 8°C and overnight a minimum of 3°C.
John said: “It will be turning milder with rain into next week. “There will be quite a rapid thaw of the snow this weekend as temperatures are going back to what they should be for the time of year, and this will be helped by the quite strong winds.”
Coun Jack Scott, Sheffield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “All efforts are being put into reducing the local risk of flooding when the snow melts.
Chris Morris, of Amey, which is subcontracted to look after the highways on behalf of Sheffield Council, said: “We’re fitting snow ploughs to our vehicles, so we can start clearing snow straight away.
“We’re also doing what we can to reduce the risk of flooding when the snow melts. Our drainage teams are clearing snow from drains in known flood hot-spot areas and will continue to do so over the weekend.”
