Arson project under way in city suburb
AN ARSON reduction project is under way in a Sheffield suburb to try to cut the risk of deliberately started fires.
The scheme has been launched as a joint project by the Woodhouse and Mosborough Safer Neighbourhood Team and South Yorkshire Police after statistics for last year showed the period between February and April was the busiest for nuisance fires.
Operation Equinox, which will run until the end of April, involves joint police and fire service patrols with staff looking for potential fire risks, including fly-tipping sites.
Residents who have reported wheelie bin fires have been visited to tell them about the work under way to tackle the problem, and police and fire representatives plant to visit Brunswick Primary School to deliver a special assembly around the topics of anti-social behaviour and arson.
A day of action is also planned where pupils will help promote wheelie bin security by handing out bin safety stickers to residents.
The results of the operation will be publicised at a Woodhouse Forum meeting on April 19.
