Archaeologists appeal to unlock village’s Roman past

Archaeologists looking for Roman remains in a South Yorkshire village are appealing for donations to help fund a dig.

Experts believe Swinton could be home to a previously undiscovered Roman site, and want to raise £3,500 to excavate a particular area.

Three months ago a man called Andrew Allen found around 90 Roman pottery shards while gardening at home in Swinton.

Now Elmet Archaeological Services wants to explore Mr Allen’s garden to find out more about how the site was used in ancient times.

A ‘crowdfunding’ web page has been set up, offering gifts in return for donations. n Visit www.sponsume.com/project/unlocking-swintons-roman-past for more information.
