A CAMPAIGN to help young people in Sheffield gain their first step onto the career ladder has found work for 75 teenagers in less than a year.
The Star and Sheffield Council’s Apprentice Challenge, designed to assist 16 to 18-year-olds not in education, employment or training, has been praised for reaching its latest milestone.
It means there are just 25 places left for employers who want to take advantage of the scheme, which part-subsidises the wage of an apprentice for up to two years.
Council leader Julie Dore, who began her own professional life as an apprentice, has called on businesses to invest in the city’s young people through the challenge.
She said: “This scheme is one of the things I am most proud of from my time as council leader.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg said: “Apprenticeships are at the heart of the coalition’s drive to provide employers with people who have the skills needed for their businesses to prosper and compete. For so many young men and women, these programmes open the door to a long-lasting and successful career.
“There were well over 5,000 places in Sheffield during last year, a huge 54 per cent increase on the previous year. I’m pleased this scheme will help add to our ambition going forward. I’m delighted The Star is on board and I urge employers to come forward and take part.”
