Advice after chimney fires

South Yorkshire firefighters are urging people to get their chimneys swept – after attending seven fires in the space of 48 hours.

The fires were reported on Red Hill, Kiveton Park, Rotherham; Psalter Lane, Brincliffe, Sheffield; Bawtry Road, Bessacarr, Doncaster; Springvale Road, Crookes, Sheffield; New Road, Brampton, Barnsley; Alverley View, Alverley, Doncaster and Marsall Lane, Woodseats, Sheffield, over the weekend.

The incidents involved traditional open fires, wood-burning stoves and gas fires, with embers becoming stuck in unswept chimneys and, in one case, an incorrectly fitted flue.
