HUNDREDS of people are to descend on a tiny parish church in Sheffield for the funeral of murdered grandfather Alan Greaves.
The church organist’s send-off is to be an open and public celebration of his life rather than a private, sombre service - with the ceremony relayed by video-link for the overflow of mourners.
Instead of restricting attendance to relatives, widow Maureen Greaves and her four grown-up children want ‘anyone and everyone’ to be there.
The service will be held at St Saviour’s Church in High Green - where 68-year-old Mr Greaves was on his way to play the organ when he was attacked on Christmas Eve.
Vicar, the Reverend Canon Simon Bessant, said: “Maureen and her family do not want a private service. They will welcome anyone and everyone who wishes to attend the event.
“This community has been shocked and outraged, and I think many people will want to come.”
The funeral will be at 12noon on Wednesday, February 6.
