£14m plan to save energy

A PROGRAMME to spend millions of pounds installing energy efficiency measures in deprived parts of South Yorkshire is being launched in Sheffield this week by cabinet minister Chris Huhne.

The Energy and Climate Change secretary is unveiling the BIG Energy Upgrade at the University of Sheffield’s ICOSS building research centre, where he will talk about the potential benefits of the scheme for the region’s green economy.

The programme will cost £14.9 million across Yorkshire and the Humber - and cover 10 ‘deprived’ areas.

Parts of South Yorkshire to benefit will be Athersley, Barnsley, and two areas of Wheatley, in Doncaster.

A spokesman for the Department for Energy and Climate Change said: “The project addresses the national priority of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from homes, required to meet national CO2 reduction targets.”

Funding is from the Government and a £7 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund.
