A South Yorkshire charity has received a £10,000 makeover after winning a national community spirit campaign.

Rotherham Rise secured a redecoration of its Main Street premises after being selected from more than 100 charities and community groups across the UK, to win the top prize in the Johnstone’s Trade Community Spirit campaign.

The facility is being transformed into a women’s centre to provide space for all women to come together to gain confidence, develop skills, take part in training, access groups and activities. It will also provide support for women and children affected by domestic and sexual abuse.

Sue Wynne, chief executive of Rotherham Rise, said: “To win the Johnstone’s Trade Community Spirit prize has been a fantastic boost for us and will make an incredible difference. The project will allow a more comfortable café style environment and we hope this will encourage women to come forward and use the drop in services and support.

“Johnstone’s Trade and Bell Group have done a fantastic job of transforming the interior of the building and we have now gone from a new premises with plenty of work needing doing, to having two rooms fit for purpose. We can’t thank Johnstone’s Trade and the Bell Group enough for this fantastic prize and hopefully we can continue to secure support to develop other areas of the building.”

Rotherham Rise was one of four charities - including Project Ability in Glasgow, the Oasis Community Centre in Worksop and the Hawksmoor Youth Club in Greenwich - to be shortlisted and eventually crowned the winners following a national public vote.

Richard Mazurkiewicz, marketing manager for Johnstone’s Trade, said: “Rotherham Rise does an incredible job across the local community and we are proud to support such a worthwhile cause. The charity does fantastic work and we are delighted that the redecoration makeover will help it fully open up its new services and premises.

“The building has undergone a fantastic transformation from the start of the project and we are proud to have helped create a very inviting environment. One of our big commitments at Johnstone’s Trade is to support the communities in which we operate and Community Spirit is one fantastic way for us to support truly worthwile causes.”
