Lizards and a doberman dog were rescued from a smoke-filled house by firefighters last night.

Crews were called to Chaucer Road, Mexborough, Doncaster, at 11pm to reports that the front door of a semi-detached house was alight.

There was nobody in the property at the time but when firefighters searched the house they found a number of reptiles and a dog inside.

They rescued all of the animals but left a large snake inside, which was unharmed.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is underway.
