BIRTHDAY boy Theo Madden has forgone presents this year to help poorly youngsters in South Yorkshire.

The music-loving nine-year-old asked his friends to swap buying toys for buying his new album to raise cash for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston.

The record, called Tiny Dinosaur, features an eclectic mix of music made by the Barnsley schoolboy using computer software, as well as his voice on some tracks.

More than 100 copies of the album have already been snapped up after the youngster - who plays drums, piano and sings - decided to use his creativity to help others.

He is following in the footsteps of dad Chris, who has worked in the music industry and previously ran a record label, and mum Helen, a multi-instrument player and music school leader.

Chris said: “We are hugely proud of him and what his creativity has helped bring into the world.

“Last year on Theo’s birthday we took him bowling and he came home with a binbag full of presents he was excited to open, but I don’t know how many of those toys he actually played with.

“He chose to do something alternative and help others with his music.

“We’re just delighted he didn’t even think about the fact he wasn’t getting any presents, he was absolutely buzzing that something he’d made and put on a CD was being supported.”

Theo, a pupil at Barugh Green Primary School, launched the album on his own label International Sounds for his birthday.

In total 130 copies of the album - released under the name Theo Supernaise - have been bought, while internationally-renowned poet Murray Lachlan Young has written a poem as a special gift insert.

Theo, who started the project when he was seven, said: “My dad said I could make the tracks into an album and then I thought it would be a good idea to help poorly children.

“My dad told me about Bluebell Wood and the amazing work they do there. There are always people who aren’t as lucky as you ,so do whatever you can to help them.”

Sarah Champion, Bluebell Wood chief executive, said: “I’d like to thank Theo and his family for choosing to support Bluebell Wood.

“The album sounds a great idea, and everyone at Bluebell Wood would like to wish Theo a very happy birthday.”
