Litter crackdown as dozens face courts

MORE than 20 fines have been dished out by Doncaster magistrates in the latest wave of prosecutions under laws to stop littering.

All the cases were put before the courts on March 24 in what is the latest in a series of prosecutions under a continuing clampdown.

In total, the cases saw fines and charges of £5,941.73 levied, made up of fines, charges and victim surcharges.

The cases were brought to court by Doncaster Council against people who failed to pay initial spot fines issued by wardens who saw them drop litter.

Director of environment Peter Dale said it was not a money-making exercise.

He said: “The council takes strong action against people who seek to spoil it. Taking someone to court for an unpaid Fixed Penalty Notice is always a last resort but it is important that we hold those who drop litter to account.”
