The pride of lions took just seconds to tear open beautifully wrapped gifts as bosses celebrated the first anniversary of their arrival in England.

The big cats were living in small cages in Romania before last February but are now back to full health.

Park managing director Cheryl Williams said they wanted to make it a special day so gave them brightly decorated gifts of wrapped up meat.

But dishing them out was a little complicated.

Cheryl said: “We made sure the lions were locked in their house, and then we took the boxes into their reserve, and put them down at strategically placed points. We let them out and they were pretty curious as to what it was that had appeared in their reserve at first.

“They started sniffing around and as soon as they had got the scent of the meat, that was it.”
