Links to Europe and India
SHEFFIELD should build more links across Europe and worldwide – including establishing a partner city in India – to boost trade, a report has recommended.
The city can benefit "both economically and socially from greater internationalism", according to the document being presented to Sheffield Council's Strategic Resources and Performance Scrutiny Board.
It recommends the council co-ordinates efforts, but that urban development company Creative Sheffield, both universities, and the Chamber of Commerce are also involved.
The council's 'International Strategy' report highlights recommendations from research already conducted by Dr Daragh O'Reilly of Sheffield University.
He has called for Sheffield to strengthen links with emerging economies in South Asia by further developing existing ties with Chengdu, in China, and establishing a partner city in India.
Meanwhile, Dr O'Reilly said there should be "consideration of opportunities in Malaysia" after a relationship was established with a visit to the country last year by council leader Paul Scriven and Hallam University vice chancellor Prof Philip Jones. They discussed how to attract more Malaysian students to Sheffield and Coun Scriven was in talks with petroleum company Petronas about locating a research and development facility at the Advanced Manufacturing Park, Waverley.
The council report also proposes work is carried out to seek more EU development funding as the Objective One programme to help the continent's most deprived areas – including South Yorkshire – comes to an end.
