Lily's medical library is real labour of love

A UNIVERSITY lecturer from Sheffield travelled more than 3,000 miles to set up a medical library in a remote region of Ghana.

Lily Canter travelled with charity FREED UK to Nandom to report on health and education projects and help create a new study room.

The associate lecturer in journalism at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, joined a 20-strong team of medical professionals, teachers and students for the charity's annual visit.

The 31-year-old said: "It was my second trip to Nandom and it was great to see all the projects we set up previously still working well and improving the lives of hospital patients and school children.

"In between reporting on all the different projects at the hospital and local schools, I used my literary skills to help categorise the medical library which also had a fiction and non-fiction section. I really enjoyed doing hands on work this time, rather than just reporting on what everyone else was doing."

During the two-week trip, a dental unit was set up at Nandom Hospital, a kitchen opened for staff and patients, and a borehole was dug at the hospital farm to irrigate crops.

Lily reported on the projects for regional newspapers, national magazines and websites. Her husband Mark Dayman, a cabinet maker, built a wall of bookcases in the library and fitted the hospital kitchen with wall units.

Dery Tuopar, FREED UK founder, said: "The impact of all of the projects has been absolutely huge. People are now moving away from traditional methods of treatment and coming to the hospital which is now a centre of excellence.

"All of the other projects have been absolutely fantastic and the team has achieved so much."
